Here is a good description of how the root system works with Growing bonsai trees and why you need to understand this to keep them healthy.

The Bonsai Tree soil in between watering starts to dry out as evaporation and drainage take its toll and the moisture is replaced by oxygen. The fluctuation from wet to slightly dry is the same as the inhaling and exhaling of our lungs. The most important thing this shows is that a constant balance is maintained, to assure your Bonsai Tree’s well being.

Also the rate at which your Bonsai breathe varies with conditions which is why it is important to understand your particular Bonsai tree.
